Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D. is the Undersecretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator. Prior to this position, Dr. Lubchenco was an environmental scientist and marine ecologist actively engaged in teaching, research, synthesis and communication of scientific knowledge. She grew up in Colorado, received her PhD. and taught at Harvard University, and then moved to Oregon State University where she became the Wayne and Gladys Valley Professor of Marine Biology and Distinguished Professor of Zoology. Dr. Lubchenco served on the Pew Oceans Commission and as a member of Joint Ocean Commission Initiative. She was a presidential appointee for two terms on the National Science Board, Managing Principal for the Communication Partnership for Science and the Sea (COMPASS), and founder of the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program. She is a former president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Ecological Society of America and an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Royal Society of London.
